Jamie Tedder always longed for a dark caramel tan.
As a redhead with a fair complexion, however, sunbathing was more likely to make her look like a beet than a bronzed goddess.
But these days, the DeSoto County resident always looks like she has been on vacation, thanks to her handy gun that releases a fine mist of sunless spray tanner.

"A month of tanning in a tanning bed will get you the same color," said Tedder, who runs her own mobile tanning business.

The mural-painter-turned-spray-tan-artist launched JaMazin Mobile Tanning three years ago and travels across Memphis and DeSoto County airbrushing her clients in the privacy of their homes.
The mobile spray tan business has taken off in the last three years around Memphis. Where there was only one, there are now half a dozen.

Many health professionals are touting the sugar-based tanning solution as a great alternative to sunbathing and tanning beds.
This time of year, Dr. Robert Skinner, chief of dermatology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, gets a slew of patients asking him about spray tans.
"It's a good thing in that it keeps some people from going and laying out to get tan," he said.

Inside a shower-sized pop-up tent, Tedder sprays people in bathing suits or au naturel.
It takes less than 10 minutes for her to tan someone from head to toe and another 15 for the solution to dry.
And with 35 to 65 clients a week, she stays busy.

"People joke, 'Can you give me abs?' and I say, 'Yeah, I can,' " said Tedder, who also does shading to give people the appearance of defined muscle tone.
"It takes 5 to 10 pounds off of you visually," she said.

Running $35 to $55 per tanning session, her clients include brides-to-be, girls prepping for prom, body builders and a slew of high- profile Memphians.
She has even sprayed some of the tiny beauty pageant contestants for the show "Toddlers & Tiaras."
Spray-tan artists say their personalized services are nothing like the one-tan-fits-all spray booths found at tanning salons.

"The younger girls want a dark tan and the older women want a more natural look," said Jenny Price, owner of The Mobile Tannery.
Price mixes her own solutions to complement her clients' skin tones.
The Downtown resident started the business after a recent divorce pushed her to become financially independent.
But Price was also drawn to sunless tanning because she lost her father to skin cancer and her mother is a breast cancer survivor, she said.
"I can stand behind this," Price said.

The active ingredient in most sunless tanning sprays is dihydroxyacetone, known as DHA.
Derived from sugar, the DHA solution clings to the amino acids in dead skin cells and browns the skin similar to what happens to a half-eaten apple left out.
As dead skin cells slough off, the color gradually fades in seven to 10 days.

The American Academy of Dermatology doesn't take a position on self-tanning sprays, but in 2000, the academy praised it as a promising alternative to the damaging ultraviolet radiation of tanning beds.
The risks of ingesting DHA are not known and health care professionals say to close your eyes and hold your breath while the tanner is applied.

What's important for people to know, says Dr. Skinner, is that spray-tan solution does not protect from ultraviolet rays from the sun, and people still need to use sunscreen.

In a short time, spray tans have come a long way, Tedder says.
There's no funky smell, she said, and people don't have to worry about looking like an orange Snooki, from the reality show "Jersey Shore."
"If they have that look like they just got back from vacation, you know it's a good one," she said.

For the best fake tan, she suggests thoroughly exfoliating beforehand and being sprayed two or three days before your event.

Recently, Tanner swung by one of her client's homes and popped up a spray tent in the kitchen, while a young girl went to slip into a tank top and a bikini bottom.
"Everybody has a little bit of shyness," said Tanner, who tries to make people comfortable about baring their imperfections.
"I say 'Don't worry about it.' I love making people feel good about themselves," she said.

The personal airbrush spray tan is applied by a technician with a spray gun verses the spray tan booth is fully automatic and there is no technician in the room with you. Depending on your comfort, you can wear as little as you wish with either the personal spray and spray tan booth. Some people don't like tan lines, so going nude is perfectly ok with either.

While the spray tan booth is permantly installed in salons, the personal airbrush spray tan technician can come to you in the privacy of you own home or office. This process is portable and compact!! The technicians carry their own fold-up pop up tent so that the mess is contained. With the new HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) airbrush spray tanning units, there is hardly any overspray, so the mess is almost non existent.

The quality of your airbrush tan will depend not only on the condition of your skin, the solution that the technician will use, but also on technician's skill. There are many very good technicians, who will give you a great tan, but there are also many not so good ones. Use the one that has been recommended or that has spray tanning experience. Ask Questions!!! It won't hurt!

The spray tan booths, if you have not "mastered" the art of the booth, could come out uneven and streaky and sometimes orange!

After your personal airbrush spray tan, you will have automatic color! You will need to wait 6 to 8 hours before showering. With the spray tan booths, you will come out lighter and not feeling the "love" of color as you will with the airbrush tan. With the booth tans you often have to wait about 5 hours before showering. Not to mention, the spray tan booths have a funky smell compared to the airbrush tans that don't!

A great advantage of a hand held airbrush spray unit is that you don't have to spray tan your whole body. You can have your legs done, or just your face.

Personal spray tans errors can be corrected or "fixed" whereas the spray tan booths can not.

Another great advantage of airbrush spray tan is that if you get a real good technician, she can "reshape" or contour your body by applying extra color or reshading your stomach, torso, hips, etc to create an illusion that they are slimmer or "buff." :) If you have swimming tan lines, she can also fill in the white patches thus creating an even, full body tan. That can't be done in a spray tan booth, where everything gets darker, so that tan lines are still visible, although they blend in better.

Airbrush tans "bronzer" comes out of clothing easier than the booth tans. Most anything you come in contact with will have the bronzer rub off on...like your clothes, shirt, jeans, bra, and undies. Also your pillowcase may have residue if you decide to sleep in the bronzer. You might be doing a load of laundry, but it easily comes out of your clothing!

Airbrush tans last longer (5 - 10 days) than the booth tans (3 -4 days). I even have clients that have a tan line after two weeks! Of course depending on how well you treat it, it can last longer!

There are some good booths out there, but NOTHING can spray a client like another human can.

What preparation do I need to carry out for my spray tan?

You should exfoliate well the day before your tan in order to remove any dead skin cells (this will help prolong your tan). If you shave or wax, this should also be done before the day of your tan. Do not wear deodorants or make up or any other preparation on your skin on tanning day as these can act as a barrier to the tanning solution.

How does spray tanning work?

Your body is sprayed with a solution that contains a certain percentage of DHA (DiHydroxyAcetone), a colourless sugar which reacts with the Amino acids in the dead layers of your skin and over a period of a few hours will turn brown.

Is spray tanning safe?

Yes! DHA has been approved for cosmetic use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Canadian Health Ministry and most of the EU member nations. It is considered nontoxic and noncarcinogenic. DHA based Sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, Canadian Dermatology Association, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association.

How long does a spray tan last?

Your body constantly 'sloughs off' dead skin cells. This is why natural sun tans fade over a few days. Spray tanning only affects the outer skin layer, so again, as your skin cells are naturally shed, the spray tan will fade. Your tan should last 5-14 days, typically 7 days, but longer if you look after your skin by moisturising every day. However, we cannot offer a guarantee as everyone is different.

Can anyone have a spray tan?

Most people are suitable to have a spray tan. We suggest that pregnant women in the first trimester, those with severe asthma or with very sensitive skin refrain from spray tanning. But as always, consult with your doctor first!!!

DHA is a chemical derived from glycerin and was first used in the treatment of diabetes, as some diabetics are better able to tolerate DHA than glucose in their treatment! So basically, diabetics, you can have a sunless spray tan. However, if you are unsure, please contact your doctor before your session.

As far as under age, we require the signature and presence of the parent or guardian for those under 18. Also, we require that they are clothed in either swim trunks for males or bikini for females (or equivalent clothing).

What should I wear for my spray tan?

You can wear as much or as little as you like. For men we would suggest dark swim trunks or boxer shorts. For women, an old bikini or dark bra and undies. However, you are perfectly welcome to have your tan topless or nude and many people do.

Will I go orange or streaky with a spray tan?

No, absolutely not! Orangeness is the result of older tanning agents. A professional spray tan with modern tanning agents avoids this, and streakiness is caused by improper application of home tanning creams and sprays - which is why you should always let a professional apply your tan.

How long does it take to get sprayed?

It takes almost 5 minutes for spraying time approximately 10-15 minutes per person on drying time.

What do I do after my spray tan?

Follow these simple rules...Just wear loose dark clothing and do not shower for at least 8 hours as this can remove some of the tan before it has had a chance to develop.

The first night, it is best to wear baggy loose clothing in order to prevent disturbing your developing tan and to protect your sheets (do not sleep in silk sheets as these WILL stain)

When you do first shower, you may notice some brown staining in the water. Do not panic! This is just the marker dye washing off, revealing your tanned skin underneath.

Avoid soaking in the bath as this encourages the sloughing of dead skin cells and will hasten the fading of your tan.

Avoid swimming pools as chlorine will hasten the tan fading.

Moisturize every day (preferably twice) in order to keep your skin and tan in tip top condition

The Spray Tanning Process

To get the best possible results from your spray tan follow these simple guidelines:
Prior to your appointment:
~Wax or shave 24 hours before your session
~Exfoliate prior to your session...This is very important!
~Remove any makeup, body jewelry, deodorant or lotion.
~Be Careful What You Wear...After your session, we recommend you wear dark, loose, baggy clothing and open shoes after your tan. Tight fitting clothes and shoes can cause skin friction in the first couple of hours after your spray tan and this may affect the outcome of your tan.Any rub off the bronzer should easily wash out of most fabrics. Avoid Nylon, Wool, or Satin as these may absorb the bronzer.
After your session:
~Avoid contact with water for the next 6 to 8 hours. That means no showering, sweating, swimming! This gives the DHA time to develop on your skin.
~After showering, apply moisturizer. Hydrated skin attains the tan longer. Avoid lotions containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA's) as these may cause the skins exfoliation.
*Moisturize is very important....Try to moisturize at least twice a day!!!
After the DHA has time to develop you can shower and you will see the bronzer coming off in the shower-DON’T worry you will now have a tan that will last for days or even weeks!
Taking Care of Your Tan:
~Use a soft washcloth or a poof for daily use.
~Pat your skin dry, don’t rub.
~Apply lotion at least 2 times daily.
~Use shower gels not bar soaps...
~If you start to get blotchy: lightly exfoliate your skin to even out the color to a lighter tan.
~The following can lighten or make your tan look blotchy:
